Jackie

A Killer’s Mind

Jackie is named as one of the girls harmed in the serial-killing case, but the available evidence provides little individual information about her. Her clearest role is in Zoe Bentley’s confrontation with Rod Glover: Zoe invokes Jackie alongside Clara and Beth Hartley to reject Glover’s assurance that cooperating with him would make things easier. In that exchange, Jackie’s name turns the victims’ remembered fate into a direct challenge to Glover’s apparent concern.

Identification and Evidence

The evidence identifies Jackie through association with the other girls Zoe names, not through details of her background, relationships, or the circumstances of her own case. When Zoe asks whether things had been easier for Clara, Jackie, and Beth, Glover acknowledges that what happened to them was terrible while presenting himself as someone who hopes the police will find the killer. The exchange establishes Jackie as one of the victims in Zoe’s understanding of the case, but it does not supply a fuller account of her life or death.

Place in Zoe’s Investigation

Jackie’s name appears in a broader struggle over whether Zoe’s warnings about Glover will be taken seriously. Zoe has already tried to explain her suspicions to the police, laying out her research, her observation of Glover at Durant Pond, and what she says she found in his home. Her account meets skepticism; when she begs the officer to investigate, he instead cites Glover’s presence in a search party at the time Clara was killed as an alibi. That alibi concerns Clara specifically, not Jackie, but it illustrates the institutional resistance against which Zoe’s insistence on the victims’ names takes shape.

Narrative Significance

At the door, Jackie is not described through a scene of her own. She enters the narrative as part of a short list that Zoe uses to expose the contradiction between Glover’s reassuring language and the danger she believes he represents. The list gives Jackie a distinct function without supplying unsupported biographical detail: her remembered fate helps make Zoe’s accusation concrete, and her name remains part of the evidence Zoe insists the adults should confront.
